A Descent Into Madness

Charlotte Perkins Gilmans, The Yellow Wallpaper, is narrated by a woman who is suffering from a form of depression, and upon her husbands advice, goes to stay at a summer house to relax and escape the troubles of everyday life. In this house, the narrator finds a room decorated in paper she does not particularly like. It is in her relationship with the wallpaper that we enkindle map her inevitable descent into madness. Beginning with a watertight dislike and irritation of the wallpaper, following a dangerous irresistible impulse with it and leading to hallucinations, we can observe the narrators filiation into insanity.

Upon settling in the vacation house, the narrator notices her room is cover in a wallpaper that she describes as repellant, almost ill-scented; a smoldering unclean yellow strangely dim by the slow turning sunlight. (Gardner, 65) She goes on to exclaim that she hates the wallpaper and hopes she does not have to spend too practically clipping in this room. However her husband, a high standing mendelevium who believes his wife has a form of depression and needs scads of rest and relaxation, recommends she spend as much time in the room as possible, away from anything overstimulating. While her apparent repulsion for this particular piece of décor isnt alarming or unusual, the narrator begins to fixate on it.



On more than superstar occasion in the narrative she would comment on how much she enjoyed the room all but that horrid paper. (Gardner, 66) Its her steady disapproval of and irritation with the wallpaper that grows into an obsession.

As the narrator spends more and more time in the room trying to go back from her mental illness, she becomes fascinated with the wallpaper. She becomes intrigued by the lines and shapes within the wallpaper and finds herself look for for some severalize of predictable pattern within it. I will follow that pointless pattern to some sort of conclusion.
