After the end of the Spanish-American war, the Philippines wanted their freedom. Their leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, estimation that independence had be promised by American officials. After the U.S. conquest of Spain, officials ordered Aguinaldo out of Manila. In 1899 he proclaimed an commutative Philippine Republic and war between the U.S. and the Philippines began (Norton, 407). Both sides fought hard. U.S. legions destroyed villages, tortured prisoners, and set up reconcentration areas. These areas were conceptived places that supporters were allowed to live. Anyone outside the secure area was subject to death and destruction. Inside the secured areas were non a great deal better with poor sanitation, starvation, and disease.
When the revolt was suppressed, resistance against U.S. linguistic rule remained.
