The story opens with Dave, the 17-year previous(a) protagonist, walking to the crib from a nonher daytime of working in the domain of a functions. He decides to make a stop at the town store and asks the owner, Joe, if he can borrow the Sears Roebuck catalogue to depot for a gun. After some conversation Joe offers to sell Dave an old shooting iron of his. Dave agrees to buy it and says he will bring the cash in the next day.

Dave returns home and asks his mother for both dollars so that he may buy the gun from Joe at the topical anesthetic store. At first, his mother vigorously refuses, but Dave eventually ends up talking her into the idea. She tells him she will give him the money but solely under the condition that the gun will belong to his father. Dave agrees and runs back down to the store to purchase the two dollar pistol.

Instead of release straight home after purchasing the gun as he had promised, he waits until he knows everyone will be incognizant to return home so that he will not have to hand the gun everyplace to his mother indemnify away.

The next morning, he sneaks out before sunrise and heads over to work.



He tells his boss, Hawkins, that he came early so that he could take his mule, Jenny, to the fields with him. With Jenny in tow, Dave heads far into the fields, plows about two rows and decides he is ready to actually shoot the gun. He fires the pistol and accidently shoots and kills Jenny. Dave immediately buries the pistol at the base of a tree, and thinks up a a story to tell his boss.

He lies to Hawkins about Jennys death and they proceed to arrange a burial for Jenny. Daves family arrives at the burial and asks him what has happened.
