In Stanza three, Skrzynecki reiterates the bird simile, however this time comparing the migrant experience to that of “birds of passage”. The migratory nature of these birds is quite unalike to the “homing pigeon”, conveying a transitory nature of their sustentation as what birds of passage do. By doing this, Skrzynecki reintroduces an atmosphere of uncertainty along with the suggestion, “We lived like birds of passage-, Always sensing a change, In the endure”.
The use of the collective first person pronoun “we”, helps depict the haleness amongst the migrants, giving an indication that the migrants are not certain of where they belong anymore. “For over two years” of unpredictable and inconsequential living, they are looking for a new place to belong to, quite the new landscape where they have come to, conveying their desperation to conform to a society and leave alienation.
