Schwartz December 8, 2011 Counter-Cultures and the Rise of the Hipsters Ever since it’s beginning, Western elegance has had a progression of counter refining movements that lay down enthusiastically debated the position quo. Countercultures are a type of subculture that by design oppose certain aspects of larger fraternity. Each consecutive decade has seen how these countercultures have fought to wreck loving standards, cause anarchy and shake up each and every aspect of art, melody, class, and government. The most effective interpreter of counterculture would be hippies in the 1960’s who identified with rejection of popular social norms of the 1950’s. “Counterculture youth rejected the cultural standards of their parents, especially with venerate to racial segregation and initial widespread support for the Vietnam War.” [1] As the 1960s progressed, widespread tensions developed in American society that tended to flow along generational lines concerning the war in Vietnam, race, knowledgeable revolution, women's rights, and traditional modes of authority. Hippies became the largest counterculture in the United States. 1960‘s rejection of mainstream culture was best expressed in the new genres of psychedelic shudder music, pop-art and new explorations in spirituality. Carlos Santana when interviewed by Punto Digital in 2010 said, "The 60?s were a leap in human consciousness.



Mahatma Ghandi, Malcom X, Martin Luther King, Che Guevara, acquire Teresa, they led a revolution of conscience. The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix created revolution and evolution themes. The music was like Dali, with many colors and revolutionary ways. The youth of immediately must go there to find themselves." [2] Other examples of countercultures would be Martin Luther King Jr. and followers, gangs, anarchists, punk, skin heads, hip-hop, swingers, emo, Amish, and the KKK.
